This author's truly creative and twisted imagination has Dr. Cain revisiting his distant past with a vengeance. Cain has been presented to date as a man who has done a lot of self-examination, wrestled a lot of inner demons, exorcised a lot of bad memories and had succeeded in building himself into the man he thought he should have been. I did not realize how much of that Cain went through until The Witch did her best to rip away Cain's hard-won self-discipline. The author's portrayal of Cain re-wrestling his inner self into submission and hope is masterly - definitely to be savoured by writing aficionados. That aside, this addition to this series has me wondering what happens next (and just how deranged is it going to be). I definitely want to see what Cain gets into next - other than fatherhood.
