We got to know Alice through other series, set in modern times. As with those in this series (Nightwalker), this is Alice's journey to the present. The setting is World War II; a group of vampires supporting the US war effort. Alice is very different. The mother superior of a Catholic religious sect, her personality and character are more subdued... thoughtful…calculating. I enjoyed it but the style is drifting quite a bit from other Theophilus vampire/ supernatural books. Far more introspective and spiritual.

When the men went to war, an old enemy found its opening.
After more than sixty years as a vampire, Alice Bladewell has proven that grace, not nature, decides who she is.
She has built a life, a Rule, and a family of Sisters around that one conviction, and she has never once had to test it against her own history.
Pearl Harbor changes that.
Conscripted into the night shift at a Charleston shipyard, Alice finds herself working alongside women who trust her with everything but the truth — and a man from her own past who wants something from her she swore, decades ago, she would never give again.
Something is moving through the Yard in the shadows.
It wears a familiar face.
Alice has one chance to stop it without becoming, once more, the very thing she has spent her whole existence trying not to be.
Some wars are fought with armies.
Hers is fought one soul at a time. And this time, the enemy already knows her name.

Mother Alice and the nuns and novices of the order she founded are recruited for work at the dock during WWII. She learns there is an ulterior motive for them to not be allowed to refuse the work. She has also been ordered by Vladislav, her vampire boss, via a third party, to kill someone and given one year to do so. She searches for a third option rather than outright killing or refusing the order to kill the individual. What is that ulterior motive? What is the importance of the victim? Will she be able to find a third option? Don't ask Kindle's AI! Read the book for yourself; it will be well worth the time.

This 5th book about Alice previously a nightwalker and a vampire, and now a nun, takes us right into the 2nd world war, and Alice and her nuns are called to duty, as many adult able bodies women were, once the men went off to war. The factories and the docks needed labour, and so even the nuns were not exempt. With the rest of the country totally involved in the goings on of war, the Order of the Morning Dawn make an appearance once again, and this time their evil is much stronger a threat. They are targetting women, who who call themselves witches, and who they intend to use as prey. Alice is roped in to discover what is going on, and once she realises what the plot is she resolves to do all she can to protect not only her nuns, but the vulnerable targetted women too, and to stop the plot in its tracks before the whole country would be in danger from the dark threat the Order was posing. This is a nerve wrecking book, full of tension and quite dark!
